Does My Car Need a Tune Up?
If your car isn't quite running right but is in between its major factory scheduled service appointments then it could be time for a tune up. Tune up services are necessary in order to keep your car running in a safe and reliable condition. Tune ups generally do not consist of any major work, as the repair and maintenance services are often quick and affordable. The following are some of the most common services conducted during tune ups.
Replacing the spark plugs & wires
The spark plugs are what ignite the air and fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber. If they become dirty or corroded they will misfire, resulting in a poor running engine. Replacing these spark plugs and the wires that connect them to the distributor is a quick and easy process for most makes and models of vehicles.
New fuel filter
If the filter becomes clogged it will reduce the flow of gasoline to your vehicle's engine, which can cause it to sputter and stall. Replacing the fuel filter is quite simple in older cars, but some newer ones have the filter in the gas tank, making it a bit more time consuming.
New air filter
A clogged air filter can reduce your MPGs and cause your vehicle to idle incorrectly because the correct air and fuel mixture can't be concocted.
Fuel injection cleaning service
If the fuel injection unit becomes gummed up it too will prevent the proper amount of gas from getting into the engine. Running a solvent through the system can help clean it up and keep everything running swimmingly.
Car Battery replacement
A technician may suggest replacing a battery during a tune up if it is found your current one is having trouble holding a charge or is near the end of its life.
Often times a technician will hook your vehicle up to a modern computer diagnostics machine to see if it is presenting any fault codes. Even if your check engine light or any other warning light is not on doesn't necessarily mean there isn't something amiss!
