Does My Car Need Cooling System Repair?

Does My Car Need Cooling System Repair? The cooling system plays an important role in the operation of your vehicle by regulating the operating temperature of the engine. Should the cooling system, which consists of the radiator, thermostat, water pump and a series of belts and hoses, fail it could result in the overheating of the engine, which can in turn cause major damage. If you notice any of these signs of cooling system trouble it would be in your best interest to visit a local auto repair shop.

Rising temperature gauge

One of the first things that will likely catch your eye if the cooling system is having trouble operating is the dashboard engine temperature gauge rising into the hot zone. You'll want to pull over as soon as it is safe and legal to do so to prevent the engine from getting any hotter. Contact a mechanic for case by case advice.

White steam

If white steam begins to pour out from under the hood it would seem that your car is already overheating. Pull over as soon as you can to let your car cool. After the car is cold you'll likely need to add water or antifreeze, or a mixture of both to the radiator before continuing on. It may be in your best interest to call a tow truck to prevent any further damage.

Low coolant levels

From time to time it is always a good idea to check the coolant levels in your vehicle. Be sure to always do this when the engine is cold. If you discover low coolant levels it is likely you have a leak. This problem may be accompanied by one of the following symptoms of trouble.

White exhaust smoke

If you spot puffy white exhaust smoke escaping from the rear of your car there is a chance that a coolant leak has occurred inside the engine, allowing for the coolant to mix with the fuel in the combustion chamber. Unfortunately this may indicate a need for more serious engine repairs.

Visible coolant leak

Coolant, also known as antifreeze, is usually a bright green color and is very sweet smelling. If you find a liquid that fits this description dripping from your car or truck you'll want to visit that auto repair shop as soon as possible. Driving around with a coolant leak is a surefire way to get your motor to overheat.
